An Ounce of Prevention: Are You Prepared
for an Emergency

With the risk of inclement weather on the way this winter (and all year-round), distributors are wise to stock up on these temporary power products now.

Weather emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time. From tsunamis, wildfires, snowstorms, and earthquakes out west to floods, ice storms, and tornadoes in the mid-west and hurricanes and Nor’easters along the east coast, weather experts confirm that natural disasters have become both more severe and more frequent in the past two decades. That reality combined with our nation’s aging electric grid and shortage of skilled electricians translates to an increased risk of power outages for homeowners and businesses from coast to coast – and the need for distributors to shore up their inventory of the critical temporary power products that customers will demand when the lights go out and generators go on.

When natural disasters strike, distributors should be prepared to assist in restoring the power so that assessment and restoration activities can begin. Following are some of the most common categories of products needed for connecting temporary generator power to homes and buildings:
  • Portable Electrical Outlet Boxes are constructed from a high-performance UL-Listed Santoprene TPV, they are available with a variety of cover options (including standard cover plates and weather-resistant flip lid versions) and are extremely durable and weather-resistant.
  • Leviton’s Single Pole Connectors reliably supply temporary electrical power distribution for a broad range of indoor and outdoor applications without the complexity of a multi-pole connector device.
  • Leviton industrial grade Plugs, Connectors, and Receptacles are designed to withstand the most demanding conditions. These power devices include connectors for temporary power distribution applications, NEMA-configured straight-blade and locking devices, and IEC 60309 pin and sleeve plugs, connectors, inlets, receptacles, and mechanical interlocks. Popular products include Leviton's ‘Black & White’ line of industrial-grade plugs, connectors, flanged inlets, and outlets (such as Part Numbers 4720-C, 4729-C, 2311, 2313, CS6361C, 5266-C, 279-PM, and others), which offer superior performance, long lasting reliability, and features that are backed by a lifetime warranty.
  • Ground-fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs, are engineered to help protect people from the hazards of electric shock and electrocution by interrupting power if a ground-fault is detected. As the industry’s leading manufacturer of residential and commercial GFCIs, Leviton’s line of Portable GFCI Devices are engineered to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. These devices are rainproof, outdoor rated, OSHA compliant and feature weather-resistant SJTW cables.

Word to the Wise
With a recent report by the United Nations confirming that’s there’s been a precipitous rise in the number of severe storms worldwide in the last 20 years due to rising global temperatures and other effects of climate change, it’s never too late to prepare for the worst. Leviton experts recommend that distributors re-evaluate their stock of the aforementioned emergency power products twice a year – in early spring and early fall – to best prepare for the unexpected and ensure that they have the right products on hand to support their communities when disasters strike.
