Surging Ahead with a Robust Line of
Protective Devices
Surge protective devices (SPDs) are necessary to protect electronics and equipment from surges caused by lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, the restoration of power after an outage, or other disturbances. Leviton offers three types of surge protection devices, each with its own range of applications:
- Type 1 devices are mounted on the line side of the main electric service entrance panel, as well as on the load side.
- Type 2 devices are mounted to the load side of an electric service panel to protect against residual external power disturbances and internally generated power surges.
- Type 3 devices include surge protective receptacles, strips, and plug-in adapters for shielding computers, smart phones, and gaming systems from harmful transients.
Use of proper surge protective devices is required in parts of the 2023 NEC.
Leviton's Surge Protective Portfolio
Leviton’s surge protective circuit breakers, when combined with the award-winning Leviton Load Center, are designed for in-panel installation. This provides an added layer of protection to homes and feature LED indicator lights. The LEDs display power protection status and remain lit even if the breaker is tripped.
| Leviton Type 1 surge protective panels are ideal for residential and light-use commercial applications. Protection is offered in two, easy to install series of devices, R Series for split phase and the P series for split phase and 3 phase systems. entrance installations. Both panels feature status LED lights and an audible alarm and EMI/RFI filtering. The X Series panels provide the greatest level of protection with advanced technology features - performance monitoring and ‘surge counters’ to lessen the instances where surge damage could lead to the downtime of expensive equipment or machinery.
Rounding out the collection of protection devices is Leviton’s Decora® duplex or four-in-one surge protective receptacles also available in medical grade power strips. The receptacles feature EMI/RFI noise filtering and optional alarms, tamper resistance and hospital grade. The medical grade power strips feature Inform™ technology combining load monitoring and heavy-duty steel construction. The built-in overload protection turns off the strip in case of an excess in power draw and can easily be turned back on with the push of a button.
