Performance Matters Pt. I
Published August 2021
Simply Put – Performance Matters
To “win the gold,” performance matters. That was the mantra we all witnessed in watching this year’s summer Olympics. Consistency of performance is essential and is a result of constant hard work and dedication. In the electrical industry, performance is not just how a product works, but includes the unique design, competitive advantages, ease of installation, customer support, and warranty.
Leviton recently introduced their “Performance Matters” campaign for their commercial and industrial products, exemplifying Leviton’s goal and promise to deliver products that outperform and outlast. This messaging showcases that from initial concept and engineering to development and testing, Leviton’s products meet and exceed industry standards, because they know performance matters.
“From our standpoint, we design a product to not only fill an industry need, but exceed expectations,” states Tony Pulsonetti, Director, Commercial and Industrial Product Management for Leviton. “In the commercial space, we know that our products are going to be in high traffic, high usage areas so they need to stand up to additional wear and tear. It’s more than just verifying we meet agency (ie. UL, CSA, etc.) standards; these products need do more than that to withstand the harsh conditions and repetitive use they will receive over time. On top of this, Leviton provides world-class customer support to stand behind our products along with an unmatched warranty,” Tony adds.
Poke-through Floor Boxes
Leviton’s commercial poke-through floor boxes are ideal for multi-dwelling units (MDUs), office buildings, healthcare and hospitality locations where power and data is required. The key features and benefits of these floor boxes include ease of installation, maximum compatibility, and superior performance.
When installing poke-throughs, too often the floor or the cored holes are not level. This can pose big problems to installers and end-users as uneven and crooked floors not only create installation headaches, but also safety hazards. To alleviate this problem, Leviton’s poke-through boxes allow self-leveling up to four degrees, eliminating tripping hazards and unpleasant appearances.
Another industry-exclusive design is the adjustable and recessed anchoring clips which make it easy to lower the box and then securely lock the unit inside a cored hole. This also makes it easy to pull out and remove as needed for inspections, adjustments, repairs or replacements. This feature is ideal for installers as existing poke-throughs in the market feature fixed, sharp, anchors that make inserting and removing the device extremely labor intensive.
Leviton’s poke-through floor boxes can accommodate a wide range of line voltage and low voltage devices. It is a 5” system, providing more room for installation and wiring versus competitive 4” versions. To further speed installation, the system is available with pre-wired covers, featuring four 20 Amp receptacles and four QuickPort inserts for data.
The performance doesn’t stop with the install. An industry-exclusive door-in-door cover design hides the flip lids while-in-use, providing a trip-free and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The poke-through covers are ADA-compliant and exceed UL scrub water and UL crush test requirements. The system is backed by an industry-leading 5-year limited warranty and a 2-hour fire rating, ensuring Leviton’s commitment to quality.
Concrete Floor Boxes
When concrete is poured, there are many factors to consider, which makes flexibility of design and adjustability before and after the pour key components to a quality installation. Leviton’s concrete floor boxes were developed with this in mind. Concrete floor boxes are always at ground levels but common on higher floors of new construction.
Elevation screws offer up to 3” of adjustment before installation. During the installation, these screws on the corners of the device help keep the box steady. To further aid in leveling, the concrete floor box comes with a temporary “bulls-eye” leveling cover. However, the device can still be adjusted up to four degrees to compensate for any unevenness after the concrete has set. Once installed, a leveling ring allows for adjustment up to ¾” to address the different thicknesses of the flooring.
Solid, forged brass cover plates are available in a variety of configurations to meet any application.
The system comes with the 2-gang PVC floor box, low-voltage divider, bulls-eye leveling cover, and power and data plugs and reducers. Distributors appreciate that these floor boxes are simple in design, yet have many features built in to reduce the number of separate parts and SKU numbers making it much easy to order and stock.
Lev-Lok® Modular Wiring Devices
Lev-Lok devices are unique in that they employ a simple twist and lock wiring module to provide a safe and secure connection enabling a quicker installation – 3x for the initial installation and 5x faster in a swap out over traditional wiring. It’s all about “get in and get out” for installers in commercial environments. Wiring devices are usually the last to get installed, but Lev-Lok makes this a simple three-step process – install the modules in the wall during the rough-in, then simply push and lock in the wiring device and finish off with the wall plate. It’s so easy that an apprentice can usually handle the job.
Lev-Lok Modular Wiring Devices include an extensive portfolio of switches, receptacles, GFCI receptacles, USB receptacles, surge protection receptacles, occupancy sensors and even anti-microbial devices. To accommodate any commercial environment, Lev-Lok is available in heavy duty, extra heavy-duty and hospital grade.
The benefits of Lev-Lok include:
- Efficient Installations – due to the simplicity of connecting a module to a paired device, the system allows for streamlined installations
- Time, Labor, and Total Project Savings – due to the streamlined installation, facilities receive time savings, resulting in labor and cost savings
- Future-Proof – Lev-lok allows facilities to react quickly to changing demands for electrical wiring devices, including a new code requirement or change in consumer demand
Modular wiring systems can be used in a wide range of environments, including new construction, commercial applications, health care facilities, educational facilities, hospitality, airports, and even residential dwellings.
