NEC Code Adoption by States and Resources for Your electrical Professionals

The NFPA® 70, commonly known as the National Electrical Code (NEC®) serves as the standard for electrical safety across the United States and many other parts of the world. Published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®), The NEC® sets the standards regulation electrical installations, equipment and wiring in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.

The NEC is updated every 3 years and is adopted by states and municipalities both nationally and internationally. Contractors, electricians, engineers, and inspectors rely on the NEC® to achieve compliance and ensure electrical installations meet both legal and safety standards.

As of August 1, 2024, states having adopted the 2023 NEC® include: Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

The 2020 NEC® is in use in 24 states, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia.

Seven states still using the 2017 NEC® are Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin and are in various stages of updating to newer codes.

Kansas and Indiana are using a combination of 2008 NEC® codes along with other updated components, and Arizona, Missouri, Illinois and Mississippi are working off of county/municipality NEC® regulations only.
