Leviton: Historically Distinguished Electrical
Safety Leader

Leviton has maintained a significant presence in the electrical industry since its inception in 1906 when Isidor Leviton began producing brass mantle tips for natural gas lamps in New York. Leviton’s products have played integral roles in numerous American institutions including the Empire State Building, the 1939 World’s Fair, the White House, and the remodels of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

From its earliest days, electrical safety has been a cornerstone of Leviton’s mission. The company came to prominence in the 1970s as a leading manufacturer of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), GFCIs were mandated by the National Electrical Code (NEC) in 1971 for all outdoor receptacles, followed shortly by requirements for bathrooms. Since the introduction of GFCIs, there has been an 83 percent reduction in electrocutions and a 95 percent decrease in electrocutions caused by consumer products.

Leviton's commitment to safety continues, with a wide range of industry-leading products designed for the home and workplace. As national and electrical safety standards evolve, Leviton consistently develops cutting-edge products to meet or exceed these standards and maintain its position as a global industry leader.
Protecting Homes and Families

State-of-the-art safety products from Leviton greatly reduce hazards such as electrocution and fire.

Leviton’s Innovations in GFCI technology, such as the SmartlockPro® GFCI receptacles, feature patented reset/lockout mechanisms that prevent device reset if it fails to respond to a ground fault or faulty wiring. Additionally, all Leviton GFCIs conduct automatic self-testing to ensure consistent response to ground faults. Leviton does offer GFCI's that are equipped with tamper-resistant shutters, as required by NEC® 406.12, to prevent children from

inserting objects into receptacles. Installing GFCIs in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages, and outdoor areas significantly enhances electrical safety.

Arc-faults, unintentional arcing conditions in circuits, pose significant fire risks. Leviton's line of Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) includes duplex receptacles, combination units with single-pole light switches and AFCI circuit breakers.

Another crucial advancement in home electrical safety is the Leviton Smart Load Center, featuring GFCI circuit breakers that meets current UL requirements. Contractors who install Smart GFCI, AFCI, and dual-function circuit breakers can enable clients to monitor consumption and receive immediate notifications if a breaker is tripped, and provide the same SmartlockPro reset lockout protection if ground fault protection is no longer being provided.

Watertight, weather-resistant, and corrosion-resistant wiring devices: Wet and damp spaces require special attention due to the impact of moisture regarding conductivity and corrosion. OSHA and NFPA 70 rules dictate the need of many moisture-centric devices. Leviton manufactures the most innovative and highest quality products including, weather and corrosion-resistant receptacles and Wetguard® watertight straight blade and locking plugs, inlets, outlets and more.

Throughout its history, Leviton has been at the forefront of the electrical industry, creating products that enhance safety and convenience in both homes and workplaces.
