Empowering Homeowners: The Leviton Whole Home Energy Monitor

Managing a home’s energy consumption and costs is firmly under control thanks to the new Leviton Whole Home Energy Monitor

In today’s energy-conscious and highly connected society, people appreciate and increasingly expect quick access to information about their home’s operations -- making the ability for homeowners to monitor and control their electrical systems from anywhere with the simple touch of a button a definite plus.

Leviton is proud to enable that easy access with its recently introduced Leviton Whole Home Energy Monitor (LWHEM), a user-friendly device that monitors and manages the energy consumed by a home’s various electrical systems right through the My Leviton App. And as an added bonus, homeowners who pair the LWHEM with Leviton’s new Smart Circuit Breakers will gain even greater insight into their home’s energy consumption and be able to take informed actions that reduce energy usage, save money, and support the environment.

“Paired with our second-generation smart circuit breakers, the LWHEM offers access to more in-depth data and unlocks next-level energy management capabilities right through the ease and convenience of the My
Leviton App,” shared Sydney Cheatham, Leviton’s Residential Marketing Specialist.
“From controlling your smart breakers remotely to engaging alternative energy or generator power, scheduling specific circuits to run at certain times, and more, the LWHEM empowers homeowners to leverage greater energy efficiency and cost savings than ever.”

Next-Level Capabilities

“With our first-generation smart breakers, homeowners could monitor individual circuits and see how they were performing,” confirmed Greg Rhoades, Director of Marketing for Smart and New Technology Products at Leviton. “But by pairing the new LWHEM with our second-generation smart breakers, homeowners can now do something proactive with that information, such as turning their breakers on or off remotely. They can even schedule a circuit like their hot water heater to turn off during the day when their home is vacant and then turn back on later to ensure an adequate supply of hot water for doing dishes or taking a shower after dinner, etc.” Much like building management systems in large commercial facilities, he said, “the LHWEM not only helps residents conserve energy and save money, but it can also extend the lifespan of motors on electrical appliances.”

Key features and capabilities of Leviton’s Whole Home Energy Monitor include the following:
  • Energy Management – Through a simple WiFi connection to the My Leviton App, the LWHEM offers homeowners a user-friendly way to monitor and manage their home’s energy consumption (and also provides insights into ways they can save money and live more efficiently when paired with Leviton’s Second-Generation Smart Circuit Breakers). “Conventional electric consumption data can be viewed by day, week, billing period, and year-over-year, and homeowners can also access information about their solar energy, battery storage, or connected generator system,” Cheatham said.
  • Breaker Scheduling – “The LWHEM can turn Second-Generation Smart Circuit Breakers on and off from anywhere and schedule breaker activity during reduced energy rate periods to save money,” Cheatham said.
  • Designating Essential Circuits -- “Through the My Leviton App, users can easily change their essential and nonessential circuits at any time without the need for an electrician. After a grid failure, nonessential loads are automatically shed to conserve backup generator power for designated essential circuits,” Cheatham noted.
  • Safety -- The My Leviton App will notify homeowners of unusual electrical activity (such as tripped circuits or high or low voltage events), saving homeowners the stress of trying to self-diagnose a tripped breaker or the inconvenience and cost of engaging an electrician. “Homeowners can enable ‘Smart Anomaly Detection’ to receive alerts if unusual activity is detected, such as a freezer malfunctioning or an HVAC system running for too long,” Cheatham said.
  • Modularity – “Thanks to Leviton’s all-plug-on breaker design, upgrading an existing Leviton Load Center to a Smart Load Center is as easy as removing standard circuit breakers, snapping the new Second-Generation Smart Circuit Breakers in their place, and installing the LWHEM,” shared Rhoades, who noted that, because not everyone needs a fully smart panel, both standard and smart circuit breakers can be intermixed in the Leviton Load Center. “Through Leviton’s modular approach,” he explained, “homeowners can start with a standard panel filled with non-smart breakers and then upgrade to smart breakers along the way as they deem appropriate so that they can practice energy management according to their own pace and budget.”
The bottom line? The Leviton Whole Home Energy Monitor represents a solid investment in one’s home.

“For homeowners, the LWHEM helps ‘future-prep’ your home for greater efficiency and comfort, and at the channel level, familiarity with the LWHEM will position contractors well for the future because this type of system will become increasingly standard,” Cheatham confirmed. Given the growing tech-savviness and desire for convenience and control demonstrated by today’s end users, she concluded, “Leviton’s Whole Home Energy Monitor will definitely put homeowners in the driver’s seat.”
