Leviton: Strong on Sustainability

Leviton’s robust new program, “CN2030,” aims to lead the company and global community to new heights in sustainable achievement

Sustainability is a hot topic in the business world today, but it’s never been “lip service” at Leviton.

“We believe it’s our responsibility to make an impact by fostering sustainability through our behavior and building solutions that help preserve our environment,” shared Leviton President & CEO Daryoush Larizadeh.

Ever since its founding in 1906, Leviton has been a leader in the development of innovative technologies that light power and connect us all. From high-performing switches, circuit breakers, connectors, and receptacles to cutting-edge lighting controls, electric vehicle chargers, cabling systems, surge protection, submetering, and more, Leviton products serve nearly every niche of the electrical industry.

Leviton is proud to continue that legacy of leadership with its new sustainability program, “CN2030,” through which the company aims to achieve company-wide carbon (CO2) neutrality by 2030 and the even more ambitious goal of net-zero emissions (involving all greenhouse gases) by 2050. Following are just some of the proactive initiatives underway at Leviton that will help make these goals a reality:
  • Carbon Reduction and Energy Efficiency – A plan to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and increase its use of renewable energy sources will help Leviton reduce its total energy consumed per unit.
  • Innovation – Leviton’s ongoing development and promotion of such sustainable technologies as electric car charging systems, high-efficiency lighting and controls, and other smart products will help Leviton, its suppliers, and its customers further reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint.
  • Reductions in Jobsite Waste – Leviton’s expanded reliance on bulk packaging, elimination of single-use plastic across its products, and use of more-recyclable “Sustainably Smart Packaging” (SSP) will help reduce packaging waste.
  • Maximized Recycling – An increase in both the amount of waste recycled at its facilities as well as the amount of recycled content used within its products will help Leviton reduce its carbon footprint.
  • Water Stewardship – A reduction in the amount of water used per unit as well as a program to ensure that water is properly treated for appropriate reuse at its facilities will help Leviton reduce its carbon footprint.
Exceptional Execution

To help bring these CN2030 objectives to fruition and maintain accountability, Leviton established a Global Sustainability Steering Committee (GSSC) and named the company’s first-ever Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO). The company has also empowered its employees to help drive sustainable solutions through the creation of “Green Teams”. These teams are involved in sustainability activities on the local level, and they have established Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Scorecards across all locations globally to help measure the company’s carbon footprint as well as track its progress. And Leviton’s strong alliances with its many customers, suppliers, and industry organizations around the world will help support its partners in embracing these beneficial products, practices, and ideals and maximizing the collective contributions made to global sustainability.

According to Leviton’s first annual Sustainability Report (2022), proactive projects undertaken throughout Leviton facilities worldwide – including LED upgrades at Leviton’s Network Solutions facility in Bothell, WA and three facilities in Chihuahua, Mexico as well as a rooftop solar installation at Leviton’s Network Solutions EMEA headquarters in Glenrothes, Scotland -- have already reduced Leviton’s CO2 emissions by 11% between 2021 and 2022. And ongoing efforts to streamline transportation activities and consolidate orders continue to make positive strides towards carbon neutrality – a milestone which was already successfully achieved at Leviton Canada’s head office and distribution center in Pointe-Claire, Québec in 2022.

“Sustainability has been part of our approach for many years,” confirmed Ross Goldman, Chief Sustainability Officer, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Leviton Network Solutions. “We’re building our business around lighting, powering, and connecting everyday spaces with sustainability at the forefront and helping our customers around the world to minimize their own environmental impact and be more sustainable as well.”

At Leviton, “we’re excited to accelerate our efforts to combat global climate change and formalize our commitment to sustainability,” concluded Larizadeh. “Together, we’ll leave a lasting positive impact on our planet and pave the way for a brighter, sustainable future.”
