A Sea Change in Charging Technology: Leviton’s New Marine Power Pedestals

Durable, customizable, and high-performing, Leviton’s new Marine Power Pedestals provide a complete solution for dockside power and water

In the large and vibrant boating community – one which encompasses over 12 million recreational boats alone in the U.S. and which has seen record growth during and since the pandemic, according to research firm Statista -- the ability to supply power aboard is paramount. And Leviton is helping to lead the charge with its high-performing new line of Marine Power Pedestals.

“Professional and recreational boaters want convenience, and, as a result, there are more devices on board requiring power than ever before,” shared Leviton’s Eric Yarrows, Associate Product Manager, Commercial & Industrial.

Introduced in May 2023, “Leviton’s Marine Power Pedestals are designed to be installed at boat slips or other locations where boats are docked to power whatever’s on board -- from TVs, microwaves, and refrigerators to radios, speaker systems, generators, and any other appliances or devices – and also conveniently support local access to water for cleaning needs or other purposes,” Yarrows said.
“Our new line of Power Pedestals is fully customizable and comes in two designs,” Yarrows said. “Our ‘Docksider’ full-pedestal model can accommodate up to six 20-100-amp receptacles (three on one side of a slip and three on the other), including GFCI protection plus metering, LED lighting, and water valve hookups – and powers up two boats simultaneously, while our ‘Dockhead’ models are offered with or without the stand, are available with either two or four receptacles, and can be mounted on a wooden dock piling or elsewhere,” he said. “Factory-assembled and wired to order, customers simply need to mount it to the dock or post, bring in their line connections, and connect to the bus bar to begin enjoying efficient and reliable power.”

Yarrows noted that one of the biggest issues boaters face is ensuring clean, safe, and reliable power between a power source (pedestal) and their boat. “Based on the corrosive effects of water (especially salt water) and their constant exposure to the elements and weather, marinas and boats tend to experience a lot of power fluctuations,” he explained. “At the same time, if the boat in the next slip forgets to unplug from their power source before they start their engine, it can throw an inrush of power back through the cord into the pedestal and affect power sources/pedestals next to it,” he said. “To address this, Leviton’s Marine Power Pedestals offer an Equipment Protection Device (EPD) breaker that will trip and cut the power once it senses a certain level of fluctuation in the current in order to prevent damage to your boat and the appliances aboard.”

Among other key features, “our Docksider Marine Power Pedestals are made of durable polycarbonate, a material which strengthens the products’ structural integrity and ability to withstand the harsh conditions inherent within marine settings,” Yarrows said. “And unlike some competitive products which feature one giant flip lid over all of the receptacles, Leviton’s Power Pedestals offer individual flip lids over each receptacle – an extra safety feature that restricts access to the area by insects or animals while also enabling users to lock out specific receptacles and avoid plugging into the wrong one.”

“Also, if you know that a storm is coming in, the top of the Docksider unit can be removed and put in a safe place so that it doesn’t sustain damage,” Yarrows noted. “You just need to cap off the line wires coming in and the integrity of the pedestals – and your investment in them -- will be secured.”

In addition, he said, “new Marine Power Pedestals are NEMA 3R-rated to reflect their designation for outdoor use, and all of the receptacles are Leviton-branded and held to Leviton’s high-quality standards.”

A Strong Brand in a Dynamic Market

Since their launch several months ago, Yarrows said that Marine Power Pedestals have received tremendous response from boaters and marine professionals alike. “Leviton has a strong brand, quality products, and a great reputation,” he said. “While our receptacles have long been resident in marine settings, the boating community is excited to see us getting into this market with a brand-new system.”

“We’ve always supplied wiring devices and been an instrumental part of the marine market,” Yarrows said. “But with more and more people wanting to be outdoors since the pandemic and the resultant spike in demand for boats and boating activities that’s occurred, we saw a great opportunity to offer an entire pedestal system and participate in this growing market in a bigger way.”

“The marine market is expanding rapidly and we look forward to enhancing Leviton’s new line of Marine Power Pedestals with additional features and accompanying accessories in the future and to being a leader in the power pedestal category,” Yarrows concluded. “The marine power segment is a great new vertical and Leviton is excited to bring its long-standing expertise to this dynamic new market.”
