Connecting to the Great Outdoors

It’s that time of year to get outdoors. Open the windows and doors, go outside and let the summer activities begin – backyard barbeques, pool parties, and jumping through sprinklers. Whether your contractors are installing outdoor lighting, receptacles or switches – they need to make sure they are refreshed on the latest codes to keep their customers safe while they enjoy the warm weather.

The NEC® (National Electrical Code®) provides specific codes and requirements for outdoor circuits and devices to help avoid physical damage such as electrical shocks or injuries or catastrophes, such as fires, that could occur. If an electrical device is exposed to the elements, it will likely need to be rated for that application and, if covered, the cover or enclosure will have to meet a designated “NEMA rating.” This rating system by the National Electrical Manufacturer Association (NEMA) defines the types of environments in which an electrical enclosure can be used and signifies the enclosure’s ability to withstand certain environmental conditions. Installers should always refer to and follow the local code requirements for the applications they are serving.

Leviton Devices for the Great Outdoors

Look to Leviton for quality and code-compliant weatherproof outdoor devices. Check out the new additions to Leviton’s line of outdoor products including:
  • Decora® weather-resistant single-pole switch – ideal for wet and damp locations, is easy to install and requires no cover as it is already NEMA rated to meet exterior codes. Named one of the best light switches for 2023, this switch features extra corrosion protection to withstand the rigors of exposure to the elements and is impervious to water intrusion.
  • The versatile and tamper-resistant, dual wall outlet with USB Type-C™ charger is a receptacle and a charger in one device. Charge your phone or tablet while plugging in other outdoor equipment such as lights or even a smart speaker. With 60W of power, the charger is equipped with a smart chip to ensure each device gets the power level it needs to charge fast and efficiently. And its overcurrent protection helps protect electronic devices from overcharging and overheating.
  • The SmartlockPro® weather resistant receptacle meets the latest UL standards for auto-monitoring (self-test) and has the industry's slimmest profile. With Leviton’ patented reset lockout feature, GFCI resets are prevented if the GFCI is not wired correctly or is no longer providing ground fault protection.
Submetering

Leviton outdoor device covers are used to provide code-compliant weather protection. Heavy Duty While-in-use covers are available for when cords are plugged into the receptacle. Leviton outdoor covers are UV resistant and protect the devices from the elements and resist breaking, cracking or discoloration.

The great outdoors provides a world of fun activities but understanding outdoor safety helps prevent unforeseen electrical-related injuries. All Leviton outdoor-rated products carry the UL® listing and NEMA enclosure rating, all while exceeding the most up-to-date NEC code requirements. When your customers think of outdoor electrical safety, Leviton is top of mind for education, installation and product safety.
