Rising EV Sales Increase Demand for
EV Charging Stations
In 2022 worldwide Electric Vehicle (EV) sales grew by 57% totaling 10.6 million units. In the U.S. EV sales grew by 9.8% totaling 807,180 units, which was 7.6% of the worldwide sales. An increase in the adoption and use of EVs has accelerated the need to develop the charging infrastructure. The U.S. Department of Energy reports there were 143,741 public and private charging ports installed in 2022. And over five years, the installed base of charging ports has grown by a Compound Average Annual Growth (CAAG) of 28.4%. At this rate, it is estimated that there will be over 261,000 installed public and private charging ports by 2025.
The growing demand for zero emission transport will continue to influence the rise of electric vehicle sales and in turn, boost the demand for electrical vehicle charging stations. Developments in technologies like smart charging with load management, usage-based analytics and automated payment, along with the development of ultra-fast charging technology will create new opportunities for distributors, installers and commercial businesses. Leviton’s product development teams are ramping up to address these growing technologies and offer the most advanced and reliable EV chargers on the market. |
|
Other factors that contribute to the growing market are government incentives from the U.S. Department of Energy as well as several state and local incentives including state utilities. Leviton provides resources for helping you and your customers understand these incentives as well as exclusive training and education. |

EVSE Charging Solutions
- Level 1 (120V): Every EV comes with a standard Level 1 charger that plugs into any outlet. Mainly used for residential and smaller batteries, the range is on average a mere 5 miles per charge hour.
- Level 2 (240V): Allows quick charging (full charge 8-10 hours), can be hardwired or plugged into an existing 240V outlet (i.e. dryer plug) or as public standalone chargers located in rest areas, shopping centers or commercial buildings. These require installation by qualified electricians and have an average of 25 miles of range per charge hour.
- DC Fast Charging: Uses direct current (DC) to provide the fastest electric charging. These can charge up to 80% in about 20-30 minutes and are best for public and private commercial spaces, which facilitate long-distance driving – up to 250 miles of range per hour.
Public Space Driving Technology and Market Demand

Leviton partners with ChargePoint, a leader in electric vehicle technology. ChargePoint Network Services let owners control access, set pricing, display advertising, monitor station status, and generate usage reports while providing 24/7/365 call center support to drivers. Evr-Green 4000 networked Level 2 chargers are available as both wall mounts or free-standing with dual or single heads. All Evr-Green 4000 chargers are equipped with a pre-installed, network enabled SIM card, to provide real-time energy measurement through the cloud. cloud services also allow owners to set pricing as well as manage driver access from a remote desk or cellphone with real-time dashboards.
This newest Leviton DC charger expands the Evr-Green® line of free-standing charger units and meets the latest stringent codes and standards. The DC Fast charger is engineered to provide a fast charge current for the next-generation electric cars, buses and trucks in public spaces. At the heart of each Evr-Green DC are 2 self-contained, easily swappable AC to DC Power Modules. This innovative design ensures that in the rare instance one module goes down, the station remains operational. It can be installed as a standalone station or in a paired configuration providing up to 25% more power than an average 50kW station and 40% more with a paired configuration. When paired, smart power sharing and power allocation policies determine how much energy is allotted to each station in order to deliver flexible fast charging to two vehicles at a time.
A New Breed of Installers
Installing EV charging solutions opens new opportunities for electrical contractors. However, installers are required to follow a unique set of instructions and procedures including regulatory mandates and approval from utility providers for energy transfers. In addition, installers must follow community and product design guidelines. This includes obtaining approvals from location owners and local government as well as meeting signage and zoning requirements. |
