Temporary Power - What You Need and Why

Published November 2021

In many cases where there is no power, access to temporary power may be required, providing electricity for a limited period of time. Commonly used on construction sites or at remote locations, and often to “save the day” after emergencies, such as weather disasters.

As the name implies, “temporary” power is a solution for providing a power supply for a short period. It includes setting up distribution equipment, outlets, connectivity and even meter panels to ensure enough energy is being supplied. Proper planning should begin well before the electrician shows up to the job site and includes determining what wiring devices are required for safe delivery of reliable temporary power.

Leviton takes the leading role to be the temporary power solution provider with our wide range of temporary power solutions to give you the power you need, when and where you need it. Our devices are built to deliver safe and reliable power in hazardous environments, keeping you connected and preventing unplanned downtime. These include portable outlet boxes, pin & sleeve devices, industrial plugs, connectors and receptacles, and self-test portable GFCIs.

Portable Outlet Box

Portable Outlet Box Solutions

Portable electrical outlet boxes from Leviton are the perfect solution for creating OSHA and NEC compliant portable power pendants and stringers for temporary power applications. Complementary to these solutions are Leviton’s wire mesh grips, which help connect wire and prevent arc-bend. The boxes and coverplates are of non-metallic construction which provides protection against any electrical shock. The housing is extremely durable and holds up in harsh conditions – such as heat, wet environments and even chemicals. The boxes are available in both high-visibility yellow or black and in both pendant and feed-thru styles and can either be single-gang or double-gang sizes and in standard or extra deep depths. Each box contains standard and adjustable strain relief openings to accept a wide range of cable diameters. A wide array of cover options is available including standard coverplates and weather-resistant NEMA Type 3R- rated flip-lid versions in single, duplex, even three-gang receptacles.
Listed cable terminations should be used when installing any cable to a box or panel and using the proper cable connector will keep the cable secure. Additionally, stainless steel wire mesh grips from Leviton help guide and protect the electrical cables and connection to the boxes. These grips are available in multiple cable diameter ranges and are constructed with a long neck body style for extra secure grip.

receptacle encased in a watertight enclosure. In addition to providing safe power connections and disconnections, these devices provide data in real time, locally or remotely with Inform™ Technology. Inform Technology provides 24/7 access to device health, including data such as the wiring device’s temperature, humidity, liquid accumulation, line- and load-side voltage values and ground continuity. This allows for faster troubleshooting when there is a power problem and improved safety.
