“More with Less”: Leviton’s Smart
Commercial Sensors
Smart sensors help commercial settings enhance and optimize their lighting, reduce energy costs, and meet a range of building and energy codes nationwide. And Leviton’s feature-rich line of Smart Commercial Sensors is among the most robust and high-performing in the industry.
In the following interview, Reid Parks, Leviton’s Product Manager, Controls discusses the company’s high-quality line of Smart Commercial Sensors, how they address current lighting requirements for commercial spaces, and why it behooves distributors and contractors to invest in Leviton’s offering.
How did Leviton create its line of Smart Commercial Sensors?
Parks: In developing this product line, we looked at all of the customers who would touch it and their needs. End users want lighting controls that reliably turn on and off or dim based on occupancy, while building managers want to meet energy codes and reduce energy costs with products that perform as promised. Contractors appreciate products that are easy to install and program, and distributors want go-to products that enable them to carry fewer SKUs – e.g., doing more with less -- in order to maximize valuable shelf space. For all of these customer types, we’ve priced our products competitively in order to enhance their accessibility and ease of use.
What products make up Leviton’s line of Smart Commercial Sensors?
Parks: Leviton’s line consists of three main product categories – Smart Wallbox Sensors, Smart Fixture-Mount Sensors, and Smart Ceiling Mount Sensors.
How do Wallbox Sensors address current lighting requirements for
commercial spaces?
Parks: Leviton’s line of Smart Wallbox Sensors detect minor motion within up to 400 square feet and major motion within up to 1,100 square feet with great accuracy and sensitivity and programming/configuration can be achieved using the out-the-box default mode, pushbutton configuration, or the Smart Sensor App for more advanced settings. Launched in June 2020 with a core offering of passive infrared (PIR) models, we’ve since added triac dimming options, multi-tech sensors for use in a wider array |

of applications, a push-to-pair feature to connect multiple devices together so that everything operates in unison, and more. Our Smart Wallbox Sensors comply with IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, and 2022 Title 24, Part 6 occupancy/vacancy sensing, dimming, and manual control requirements, as well as receptacle control.
How do Fixture-Mount Sensors address current lighting requirements for
commercial spaces?
Parks: Launched in 2023, Leviton’s Fixture-Mount Sensors are ideal for new construction and retrofit applications such as warehouses that are updating their lighting fixtures and need a control to go with it. In terms of performance, sensitivity, and accuracy, this is one of the best fixture-mount solutions in the marketplace for high-bay lighting systems thanks to its digital PIR circuitry and brand-new, best-in-class optics that deliver high performance in uncontrolled climates and other very challenging environments. This competitively priced solution can also group together up to 16 sensors in the mesh network, which is often ideal for aisles in a warehouse or workpod spaces, and can perform simple scheduling of lights, which is often desirable in applications like parking lots, car dealerships, stairwells, and more. Based on its flexibility, Leviton’s Fixture-Mount Sensor can meet the control requirements for everything from the most stringent to the least restrictive energy codes.
How do Ceiling-Mount Sensors address current lighting requirements for
commercial spaces?
Parks: Just launched in April 2024, Leviton’s new line of ceiling mount line voltage sensors offer a code compliant solution with as few components as possible -- just an occupancy sensor with built-in power pack and photocell -- and stands as one of lowest-cost solutions in the market. No other player offers this system with as few components as we do; contractors would have needed to purchase three separate devices, but Leviton does it all in one, and the additional installation of an additional component -- a switch on the wall -- can pair with a wireless companion dimmer or switch. Our Ceiling-Mount Sensors perform auto shut-off, manual space control (by adding a dimmer or switch), multi-level control, and receptacle control to add simplicity for the contractor and enable even greater energy savings |

for the user; the sensor can also support demand response/load shedding requests from utilities for Title 24 purposes. In the past, customers who needed occupancy sensing, manual control, daylight harvesting, and zone control would have had to purchase all of the hardware components separately, but Leviton’s Ceiling Mount Sensors accomplish all of that with one unit plus a switch or dimmer if manual control is needed, and cost a fraction of the price while also reducing contractor installation time for additional labor cost savings.
How are Leviton’s Smart Commercial Sensors controlled?
Parks: The Leviton Smart Sensor App covers all of Leviton’s commercial smart sensors, is easy to install, and aids in programming at every level. The app offers contextual help on each page to assist with any questions that may arise and also provides access to Leviton’s Tech Support experts.
What final messages would you like to share with distributors about Leviton’s line of Smart Commercial Sensors?
Parks: The entire line has been met with positive feedback from customers because they’re high-performing solutions that do more with fewer components and are easy to install. At the same time, an investment in Leviton’s Smart Commercial Sensors brings customers the other benefits Leviton has long been known for, including high-quality products, trusted experts, first-class customer service and tech support, and outstanding industry longevity and reputation. Through our resource-rich website or live support, we’re here to assist you on any smart commercial sensor project whenever you need us.
