Electrical Safety Month – Working in Safer Environments

Published May 2022

When it comes to electrical safety, knowledge is power. Exposure to electricity is a serious and widespread occupational hazard that impacts both plants and employees. Dangers of electricity exposure include electric shock, arc-flash, arc-blast, and even death. Because of the severity of these dangers, it is critical your customers are not only aware of electrical hazards, but have procedures in place to prevent them.

Top Electrical Violations

Once a year, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) publishes a list of their most frequently cited code violations, where facilities fail to have preventative procedures in place. Year after year, that list consistently features violations related to electrical safety. For example, a commonly cited OSHA violation is Electrical Wiring Methods, with investigators noting unsafe substitutes for permanent wiring and incorrect use of extension cords, amongst other things. Lockout/Tagout is another infamously cited violation, a procedure that protects employees from the release of energy from servicing and maintenance equipment. Investigators frequently note that facilities do not have proper procedures, training and communication requirements for Lockout/Tagout.

Help your Customers Avoid These (and other) Citations

While there are many hazards to keep an eye out for in terms of electrical safety, Leviton is ready to help you and your customers along the way. Our WISE (Working in Safer Environments) Program is a training initiative designed specifically to alert workers to some of the most common electrical hazards and the safety solutions that may be used to remedy them. The training can be given virtually or in-person by a Leviton Specialist, with the Leviton Specialist conducting an optional facility safety audit before the class. Classroom materials are provided along with a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course. If you are interested in hosting a WISE training for your customers, email industrial@leviton.com. Remember – knowledge is power!
