Smart Wallbox Sensors Just Got Smarter

Published March 2022

Smart sensors combine occupancy/vacancy sensing with dimming or ON/OFF switching to provide a simple solution for easy energy savings, local control and code compliance for all environments. Smart sensors just got smarter…and cleaner. Now Leviton offers smart wallbox sensors with an embedded antimicrobial additive. This is the clean and safe solution for common areas, such as conference rooms and offices, where wallbox sensors are often manually programmed.

Antimicrobial devices are now replacing traditional wallboxes and switches to help combat the growth of harmful bacteria in homes, commercial buildings and industrial facilities An antimicrobial agent in the treated plastic inhibits the growth of mold, mildew, fungus and odor-causing bacteria that cause discoloration, staining, deterioration or corrosion on the surface of the device in between normal cleanings.

Leviton’s new wallbox sensors with the antimicrobial surfacing joins an expanding family of antimicrobial devices from the leader of smart devices. “Leviton’s antimicrobial products have come in high demand for a wide-range of industries due to the increased desire to keep frequently touched surfaces clean,” states Tony Pulsonetti, Leviton’s Director of Product Management. “Think about all the public places where constant touching of devices such as light switches and wallplates is common. The list is endless,” he adds.

Take Your Pick

Leviton offers the widest selection of occupancy and vacancy sensors. All models feature the latest digital PIR and lens technology, which accurately detects minor motion up to 400 sq. ft. and major motion up to 1,100 sq. ft. for an enhanced field-of-view to eliminate false OFFs. All dimming models combine occupancy/vacancy sensing with dimming and daylight response, as well as adjustable partial-on and partial-off capabilities to further enhance energy savings and tailor operation to precisely meet the needs of each application.

The two models of Leviton smart wallbox sensors with the antimicrobial additive, are the ODS15-IDW or the ODS15-GDW. Both combine occupancy/vacancy sensing with dimming and daylight response, as well as adjustable partial-on and partial-off capabilities to further enhance energy savings and tailor operation to precisely meet the needs of each application. The main difference between the two is that the ODS15-GDW does not require a neutral wire.
Simple and Clean Programming Options

Smart wallbox sensors are easy to program. They come with an out-of-the-box default mode for auto-ON/auto-OFF operation with a 10-minute timeout or can be customized through manual pushbutton programming for different room settings or configured through the Smart Sensor mobile application. When using the pushbutton method of programming, which is usually preferred based on the specific space, it’s best to select the antimicrobial smart wallbox sensor, especially if multiple people will be touching the sensor.

If the user wants to customize the settings versus using the default settings, there are three basic manual settings. First, the timer which adjusts the time that light remains on after motion was last detected; next the sensitivity level, which is set to determine the detection range for motion (from a focused area to a wide area); and, lastly, an ambient light setting which adjusts the occupancy/vacancy based on natural light in the room. If there is enough natural light streaming into the room from windows then the sensor will determine whether additional light is needed. This ambient light setting, also known as daylight harvesting, is based on four levels of control – low, medium, high or disabled.

The Smart Sensor app provides an easy and remote method to configure the sensor without having to even touch the unit. The app lets you name the devices to differentiate the locations, such as in an office or conference room or even in different areas of a home, and even allows the user to input a security code for each unit. The app can be configured to all the manual settings as the pushbutton method, but has advanced features such as a wider range of sensor sensitivity levels, timeouts and daylight sensitivity based on different hold-OFF levels for ambient light. The app even allows activation of nightlight and can customize the color to meet space needs and aesthetics.

All like all the Leviton Smart Sensors, the new antimicrobial devices comply with IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, and 2019 Title 24, Part 6 occupancy/vacancy sensing and manual control or dimming requirements, which makes selecting them even smarter.
