Commercial Energy Management Demystified

Published July 2021

Do your customers have an efficient energy management system in place? If not, you can become their hero by showing them ways to maximize building energy savings through automation and IEDs (intelligent electronic devices). Let Leviton guide you through commercial energy management solutions that will help them discover how to obtain the highest operational uptime while saving considerable energy costs.

“According to the most recent Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), 17% of all electricity consumed in U.S. commercial buildings is for lighting, making it the largest end use of electricity.”* This makes energy saving controls for lighting squarely at the center of any effort to reduce energy expenditures.

Many codes and standards, as well as utility companies, have requirements to control energy usage. By employing smart energy management systems, companies can monitor their usage and balance their loads through real-time data applications. Leviton simplifies specifying, designing, and selecting commercial energy management solutions by offering a complete suite of products scalable for any application complying to all codes and standards.

Following Codes and Standards

Energy codes and standards are the law of the land. These include the latest versions of ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, California Title 24 (Part 6) and numerous other local and national codes and standards that are requiring demand advanced energy-saving controls such as lighting and load monitoring.

ASHRAE 90.1 has been a benchmark for commercial building energy codes and provides minimum energy-efficient requirements for the design and construction, and a plan for operation and maintenance of new and existing buildings and provides criteria for determining compliance with new requirements.

The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) references ASHRAE 90.1 and shares many similar requirements. IECC provides codes and standards for energy efficiency and focuses on energy savings and carbon emission reduction for both commercial and residential. IECC addresses new construction for a structure’s walls, floors, ceilings, lights, windows, doors, as well as duct and air leakage. IECC is also revised every three years.

In state such as California, energy efficiency isn’t simply an option--it is a requirement to legally operate and occupy buildings. California Title 24 (Part 6) has been adopted by other states as it regulates building energy efficiency requirements for both residential and commercial buildings, including new construction and upgrades. Also updated every three years, this energy code ensures that builders use the most energy-efficient and energy-conserving technologies and constructions practices. In fact, this standard, which address buildings and appliances, has saved consumers billions of dollars in both electrical and gas utility bills.
